Size guide

How to Choose the Right Chisel:

  • Blade Width: Select narrower blades for fine details and larger ones for bulk wood removal.
  • Sweep and Cutting Edge Curvature: The curvature of the cutting edge is determined by the sweep, which corresponds to the depth of the curve. Therefore sweep #1 indicates a flat cutting edge, and sweep #9 represents a semicircular cutting edge. Sweep #5, #7 and #8 are intermediate accordingly. You can see it on the pic.
  • Handle Length: Shorter handles provide more control for detail work, while longer handles offer better leverage for heavy-duty tasks.
  • Curved vs. Straight: Curved chisels (Bent gouges) are ideal for scooping and creating depth, while straight chisels work best for flat or straight surfaces.
  • Mallet Usage: For larger chisels or tasks that require more force, especially when using heavy-duty chisels, a mallet can help apply the necessary power while maintaining precision. Ensure the chisel is designed for mallet use to avoid damaging the handle.
